lyrics

we should have just ran when the music began
for there are tests we can pass but this isn't one of them
too many others in mind

yet the lovers press forth in the blithe pageant's birth
old watching young milk their heyday for its worth
statues of spirit and spine

and we watch as they dance
to the rebels' waltz like we used to do
laughing and smiling
and filing along 2x2

the boys from the oil patch arrived home today
with kisses to make rival eyes turn away
as your heart plays chicken with mine

and the muffdivers chant o'er the shuffleboard cheers
but in the race to find love, we had them beaten by years
we're just off to the back of the line

and we watch as they dance
to the rebels' waltz and disappear
and only last year
the appeal of the scene here was clear

an elder comes over to share his adventure
bits of apple like shrapnel shooting at me from his dentures
im going 'skip to the love story, pal'

and he bends down to tend to a velcro askew
says 'i wish you knew exactly what we had to go through
so that you could be here with that gal'

and we watch as they dance
to the rebels' waltz and pirouette
did the voice of the vet
say it's lest or that it's best we forget?
